Lazio keen on signing Manchester United’s Robin van Persie – report

Robin van Persie faces an uncertain future at Manchester United and according to reports from Il Messaggero in Italy, the Dutchman is very close to becoming Lazio’s new striker.

The 31-year-old admitted this week that he was considering his options because he wants to be playing regular football next year ahead of Euro 2016 where he wants to play a central role for Holland once again.

Il Messaggero, who say Van Persie is a ‘step away’ from joining, report that Lazio are willing to pay approximately €15m for him, despite the fact he will turn 32 in August, but he’d have to take a wage cut to complete the move because the Serie A side wouldn’t be able to offer him the same money he is on at Man United.

Lazio see the Dutchman as an ideal replacement for 38-year-old Miroslav Klose at the Stadio Olimpico, who, like Van Persie, has a year left on his current contract.

Since Louis van Gaal‘s arrival last summer, the United striker found himself on the fringes of the first-team and managed only managing 13 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions this season.

The slower pace and wider spaces afforded to players in the Serie A would suit Van Persie and he may well be able to thrive much like Patrice Evra has since joining Juventus.

Van Persie’s future is largely up to him this summer. If he wants to stay at United, Van Gaal is unlikely to force him out of the club but if he wants regular first-team football on a week-by-week basis, he is unlikely to get that as he simply isn’t suited enough to the lone striker role in a 4-3-3.
