Ed Woodward spotted with Karim Benzema’s agent as Manchester United rumours hot up

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward met up with Karim Benzema’s agent on Wednesday evening amid speculation of a move to the Premier League.

Manchester Evening News reports that Woodward was spotted with Karim Djaziri at The Savoy Hotel in London and suggest United are willing to offer up to £40 million for the Real Madrid forward, who is currently in New York having been left out of the France national team through injury.

Benzema’s current contract runs until 2019 after he renewed his deal at the Santiago Bernabeu last August. The Frenchman has scored 133 goals in 281 appearances across six seasons for Madrid but it has been evident since his £35 million move from Lyon he has always had to play second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign Benzema back in 2008/2009 but was eventually beaten to his signature by Madrid and it looks like United could be back in for him this summer.

Louis van Gaal is determined to strengthen the forward line after seeing his strikers struggle for form last season. Wayne Rooney became United’s lowest top scorer since Frank Stapleton in 1982 with just 14 goals. Robin van Persie’s future still in doubt and Radamel Monaco returned to Monaco, so 19-year-old James Wilson is the only other open option.

It has been suggested that this transfer may be offered as a sweetener for club hero David de Gea‘s move back to Madrid this summer.
