Earlier this week, reports surfaced in Italy linking Lazio with a summer move for Robin van Persie.
Now, those rumours have intensified after Van Persie was spotted in Rome.
While it isn’t being suggested he was in the Italian capital to further negotiations with either Roma or Lazio, it’s an interesting development given that Netherlands played USA last night and also have a European qualifier in six days.
Both Lazio and Roma have denied any interest in signing Van Persie, as per Gianluca Di Marzio, but with an uncertain future at Man United, it would come as no surprise to hear the 31-year-old is considering a move away from Old Trafford.
Van Gaal is going to be ruthless this summer and is the sort of manager who won’t let personal relationships get in the way of making a necessary decision when it comes to selling players.
In that sense, he’ll have no problem shaking Van Persie’s hand and telling him he doesn’t need him any more, and that would be the right thing to do.

Van Persie was the Premier League’s best striker in his first year at United and finished the season on 30 goals. In the following two seasons he failed to score a combined 30 goals.
Sentiment is a powerful thing but during a time of massive change, it’s the last thing United need when it comes to transfers and if Van Gaal truly feels Van Persie is unnecessary at the club, he’ll politely tell him so.
