Former Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond Van der Gouw has offered his insight into new boy and Dutch compatriot Memphis Depay.
Van der Gouw has kept a close eye on Depay during his time as Vitesse Arnhem’s goalkeeping coach and has talked up the 21-year-old after he secured a move last month.
As an ex-United player himself, Van der Gouw knows just what it takes to be successful at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“Memphis can become a very good player for Manchester United,” Van Der Gouw said.
“He has a very good on the pitch attitude. Attitude is key and he has a very professional outlook. He wants to be successful, he wants to be the best, he wants to be the quickest and he’ll work hard to become all those.”
Van Der Gouw also commented on the impact he feels manager Louis van Gaal will have on Depay’s game.
He added: “In Louis van Gaal I believe he has the right manager to help him a lot. You can already see the signs of how he helped him become better when he was in his Netherlands squad.”
As United’s first signing of the summer, expectations are already high and Van Der Gouw feels that United fans ‘are going to love him.’ Too late, they already do and he hasn’t even played yet.
Following Angel di Maria’s struggles during his first year in English football, United fans may also be slightly apprehensive, given Depay’s lack of experience.
However, after an impressive display for the Dutch national team on Friday, Reds supporters were given a showcase of what the young winger can bring to the club next year, further enhancing the view that Depay can go on to be a top player for United for many years to come.
