Robin van Persie insists his visit to Rome this week was for pleasure

Robin van Persie has insisted his recent trip to Rome was nothing more than a romantic getaway with his wife.

The 31-year-old Manchester United striker was spotted in Rome less than 48 hours after reports linked him with a move to Lazio, which understandably caused those rumours to gather pace seeing as he was in the city.

However, Van Persie has nonchalantly dismissed the fact he was in Rome and brushed it under the carpet.

“All the rumours about Rome as a city are true: it is a beautiful place,” Van Persie told Voetbal International.

“I have a life away from football and I always wanted to visit Rome with my wife and this was our chance. We enjoyed it very much.”

One way or another, Van Persie has been extremely naive with this trip to Rome.

Either he was naive to believe he could go to Rome, only a couple of days after being linked with a move to a club in that city, and not expect it fuel speculation.

Alternatively, Van Persie is being naive to think United fans will simply believe him being in Rome was nothing more than a city getaway, especially given that Netherlands were in training for their crucial upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier.
