Iker Casillas was always considered a hurdle for David de Gea at Real Madrid in gaining the undisputed no.1 spot but reports from Spain today suggest that hurdle won’t be there for much longer.
Spanish TV station RTVE are reporting that Casillas has agreed a deal to leave Madrid following a change of heart about staying at the club, based on the growing discontent among fans and the expected arrival of De Gea this summer.
The news is in stark contrast to Casillas himself only a few weeks ago insisting he would welcome the competition from De Gea.
For Man United fans, it would be the worst possible news because his exit is most definitely a prelude to De Gea’s arrival.
That being said, if Casillas is set to leave then it puts Madrid in a weaker position to negotiate because it means they need to sign a world class goalkeeper this year rather than simply wanting to sign one.
Spain are due to play Costa Rica tomorrow night in a friendly so we expect this story to develop very quickly and we’ll bring you all the latest updates as and when they happen.
