Manchester United are sending Argentinian scouts to watch Nicolas Otamendi this weekend as he plays for Argentina against Paraguay in the 2015 Copa America in Chile.
Both Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria are also expected to play for the 2011 winners of the tournament, after leaving for international duty following United’s last game of the season.
Otamendi has been linked with United for numerous weeks now and Marcos Rojo fueled rumours even further by favouriting a tweet suggested he would be playing next to his fellow Argentine for United next season.
United’s interest in Otamendi has been no secret and the club sending Argentinian scouts to watch him against Paraguay on Saturday evening is just another clear demonstration of their intention to bring him.
The story is quickly becoming a drawn out transfer saga, very similar to that of Arturo Vidal last season where the whole summer was surrounded by ‘will he, won’t he’ questions. He has already been told by his current club, Valencia, that he must physically hand in a transfer request if he wants to leave for Manchester United this summer.
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague suggested that United would have to pay Otamendi’s release clause to make him their second summer signing, after the deal to bring Memphis Depay to Old Trafford was completed on Friday.
United are in desperate need of a new centre-back and leader type figure at the club, so it’s no surprise to see the Otmanedi reports continuing to gather in pace.
