Memphis Depay will look to emulate some Manchester United greats who also joined from PSV Eindhoven.
When he begins to train with his new club, he will be doing so in hope of being as successful as three former-United players who arrived at the club from Depay’s previous side, PSV Eindhoven.
The first to make the move between the clubs was Jaap Stam. Widely regarded as one of the best defenders to play for the club, he only stayed for three years after falling out with manager Sir Alex Ferguson but it was a magnificent three years.
He came to United in 1998 having won the VVCS Football of the Year award after some brilliant performance in the heart of defence for PSV. The great displays didn’t stop after the move as Stam lifted the Premier League on three occasions as well as one FA Cup and one Champions League.
Next to make the move was a certain striker called Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Ruud made records in Holland by scoring 31 times in just 34 matches for PSV before joining United and he flourished in the Premier League.
His first season saw him score 23 goals in 32 league appearances which started off with a debut goal against Liverpool in the Community Shield. He scored his first Premier League hat-trick before 2002 and ended the season as the PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
Van Nistelrooy left United having spearheaded them to a Premier League title in 2003 and he also won one FA Cup as well as a Community Shield and a League Cup. His trophy haul wasn’t comparable to Jaap Stam’s but his goalscoring record remains one of the best and most consistent in Premier League history.
Park Ji-Sung was the longest serving of the three PSV and United players. He was nominated for the 2005 UEFA Best Forward award at PSV and United went on to bring him to the Premier League.
His drive and determination remains in the minds of United fans who still love Park to this day. He was the second East Asian player to sign for United and ended his time with the club in 2012 when he moved to QPR.
Depay will hope to recreate some of the magic moments that these former-Reds player gave to United as they lifted a total of five Premier League titles together.
