Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has admitted he hopes his former club don’t look to buy Jasper Cillessen from Ajax.
The Telegraph have reported that Cillessen the number one target for Louis van Gaal and goalkeeper coach Frans Hoek and speaking before a Man United legends XI took on Bayern Munich this afternoon, Van Der Sar made it clear he didn’t want to lose Cillessen this summer.
“I hope United aren’t getting him,” Van der Sar said.
“Luckily I have some influence on that part, being on the board of Ajax.
“But, of course, Jasper is a fantastic goalkeeper. In the winter break I went to Qatar for a week and trained with the goalkeepers there. He has also improved immensely.
“He played great for the Dutch national team in the World Cup and is, like David here, a very reliable goalkeeper for us in Amsterdam. We would like to keep him for a while.”
Van der Sar now sits on the board at Ajax and has some influence over their decisions, so it’s interesting to hear he will do his utmost to make sure the Dutchman stays in Holland.
Cillessen has improved over the last two years at Ajax and Van der Sar’s staunch response when asked about a potential move to United is indicative of that.
De Gea was Van der Sar’s successor between the sticks at Old Trafford and despite United being desperate for him to stay, after three years at the club his exit looks imminent.
