Valencia deny receiving any offers for Nicolas Otamendi from Manchester United

Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United already this summer.

Reports at different stages have suggested that Man United’s first bid for Otamendi is coming this week while at other times Guillem Balague said United were already negotiating.

Today, the Daily Star have gone with a bold headline: “Manchester United AGREE deal to sign Valencia star Nicolas Otamendi.”

Have they? No. A quick look at their source takes us back to The Independent who claim a verbal agreement has been made between United and Otamendi’s agent Eugenio Lopez. Their source? The Metro.

It is with The Metro where we find the source of these reports – a tweet from Nicolo Schira, a journalist who doesn’t have the best track record (to put it lightly).

At this stage, nothing has been agreed for Otamendi despite what some papers may lead you to believe.

There has also been a follow up from Sky Sports who have spoken to Valencia and they deny there has been any offers from United for Otamendi. Given that the Argentinian is under contract with the Spanish club and has a €50m release clause, United would need to have an offer accepted before talks happened.

This is not to say United have no chance of signing Otamendi, far from out, but for the time being it doesn’t look to have gone past anything other than initial talks.
