Angel di Maria told reporters in Argentina that he was unhappy with how last season went but was keen to stay at Manchester United an improve on it.
His comments about being unhappy with how his debut campaign went at Man United was always likely to stir speculation up and that’s precisely what it has done.
Spanish newspaper Sport now claim Barcelona are lining up an €85m move for Di Maria, thanks to a €75m fee to United and €10m to Real Madrid as part of a clause in his contract.
By current exchange rates, that works out almost precisely to what United paid for Di Maria last summer but as the Euro was stronger in the summer of 2014, it would end of being a small loss at that price.
The reports also coincides with claims from Duncan Castles that Barcelona were interested in signing Di Maria.
Barcelona may have signed Aleix Vidal from Sevilla already this summer but their transfer ban stops any player from officially registering until January.
By that point, Di Maria would be ineligible for the Champions League and the season would be half over. Barcelona were willing to wait four months for Suarez to serve his ban after a £75m move from Liverpool last year, would they want to do the same again with another blockbuster signing?
There’s very little chance United have any intention of letting Di Maria leave this summer but as is the case in football, money talks and nothing will change that.
