Rio Ferdinand believes Sergio Ramos is using Manchester United for a better contract

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand does not think Sergio Ramos will leave Real Madrid.

The defender, who retired at the end of last season, buys into the theory that Ramos is simply trying to get himself a new and improved contract at Real Madrid.

United have been linked with Ramos since reports claimed he was unhappy at the Bernabeu. Certain news outlets believe United have even had a bid rejected for the Spaniard.

A United defensive legend himself, Ferdinand was adamant that Ramos would not be joining United.

Speaking on the YouTube channel of his magazine #5, Ferdinand said: “Ramos to Man United? Ain’t happening. He’s not going to Man United.

“I think he’s at Real Madrid, new contract coming up and rumours are coming out. Maybe the agent is putting something out that he’s not happy, so Real Madrid come back in with a bumper offer and he signs on the dotted line. Happy days.”

There is no doubt that Ramos would be a great addition to United’s defence. With David De Gea‘s move to Madrid seemingly becoming more inevitable by the day, United are determined to take one of Madrid’s players the other way. Ramos would bring stability and experience to an extremely vulnerable United back four.

Ferdinand’s comments go along with what many are saying. Ramos, or his camp, may simply be leaking news that he is unhappy at Madrid in order to get a new contract. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened to United, with Cristiano Ronaldo doing something similar two years ago.

Time will tell if Ramos is truly unhappy at Madrid and looking for a way out. The only thing United can be sure of, is if the 29-year-old does want to leave, Ed Woodward and Louis Van Gaal must be ready to swoop.
