Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong has signed a new three-year deal at his current club AC Milan.
De Jong put in some strong and disciplined performances in the holding midfield role, sparking rumours that Van Gaal wanted to bring the midfielder to Man United.
However, the Dutchman has now put those rumours to bed having signed a new three-year contract with Milan.
With his surrent contract set to expire at the end of June, De Jong would have been available on a free transfer but his new deal at Milan should mean that a return to the Premier League is off the cards, at least for the time being.
As a tough-tackling midfielder, De Jong may never have been a player Van Gaal even looked to bring to Manchester. Van Gaal rarely deploys a man in midfield to break up play, which is De Jong’s best ability.
As with every summer, United are linked with a whole host of players, especially midfielders. De Jong’s new deal means that he will probably end up on the huge list of players once linked with United but never joining the club.
