Luke Shaw looked like he enjoyed his first training session with new Manchester United signing Memphis Depay on Monday and it is safe to say the pair will be getting to know each other a lot more over the next year or so.
Shaw joined Man United from Southampton last summer but struggled for fitness and form during his debut campaign at the club.
Meanwhile, Memphis was brought to Old Trafford in May following a number of fantastic performances for PSV Eindhoven.
The duo still need time to develop but they undoubtedly represent United’s long-term future down the left flank:
A full flowing partnership between Depay and Shaw has the potential to become one of the best in the league.
With Shaw’s overlapping runs and energy reserves, he’d be the perfect compliment to Depay’s powerful game where more often than not he likes to drift inside.
Ashley Young brought some incisive threat to the left flank last season but the thought of Depay and Shaw together week-in-week-out is a far stronger proposition.
Louis van Gaal has shown during his time in charge of United that he is not afraid to throw youngsters in at the deep end and it is likely that he will do the same with Shaw and Memphis.
Both have the potential to become world-class in their respective positions as long as they have the right attitude off the pitch, so it will be interesting to see if they can develop next season and fulfil their potential in the Premier League.
