There was one major hurdle at Real Madrid standing in the way of David de Gea becoming their No.1 goalkeeper but it looks like that is going to be removed by the end of the week.
Iker Casillas is Mr. Real Madrid in much the same fashion as Ryan Giggs was Mr. Manchester United or Bastian Schweinsteiger is Mr. Bayern Munich. He’s spent 25 years at the club from when he was a young boy but that time is coming to an end.
Casillas is set to be sold by Real Madrid to FC Porto and an open ceremony will take place on Friday for him to say goodbye to the fans.
Although separate reports suggest Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is being lined up by Rafael Benitez, Man United fans will be reading the news of Casillas’ departure and think of only one thing – De Gea is leaving.
It still doesn’t guarantee that De Gea will move to Madrid but would the Spanish club get rid of Casillas, and end his 25 year career there, for a 28-year-old goalkeeper from Espanyol? It seems somewhat unlikely.
What Casillas’ exit does show is just how complicated this deal for De Gea was. On the one hand, United have no intention to sell for cheap and without Sergio Ramos as part of the deal. On the other, Casillas’ future had to be resolved. From that perspective, any deal dragging out was inevitable.
The main question now is whether De Gea will be flying out with the squad on Monday. If he doesn’t, his United career is all but over.
