Former Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi believes that Manchester United have signed the “best wing-back in Italy” in Matteo Darmian.
Man United officially confirmed that they had completed the signing of the 25-year-old on Saturday.
Darmian has established a solid reputation in Italy as a versatile player capable of playing on either side of defence but he is expected to replace Antonio Valencia on the right for Louis van Gaal’s side next term.
Materazzi praised Darmian and urged him to take the opportunity that has been given to him at Old Trafford.
“Darmian plays very well. In the World Cup, he was maybe not the best player but more or less did a good job,” he said.
“He has a big opportunity with Manchester United to grow because he’s a good player, he’s playing for the national team and now for Manchester [United]. I think he’s the best wing-back in Italy.”
The Italian may not be the most well-known name but he is exactly the sort of player that United need.
Van Gaal’s side were often suspect at the back last season and they would have found themselves in a much more difficult situation had it not been for the brilliance of David de Gea. Darmian will help solve the problem, although United would be wise to also bring in a top-class centre-back.
