David de Gea set to play for Manchester United once again

by Sam Peoples

Let’s be honest. None of us ever expected to see David de Gea play in a Manchester United shirt again did we?

When he was substituted against Arsenal at Old Trafford (see video at top), Man United fans sung his name, cheered and almost waved goodbye to him as we all felt his move to Real Madrid was inevitable.

However, United, more specifically Ed Woodward, has dug his heels in over De Gea’s valuation and Real Madrid have been unwilling to meet it on the grounds he is available for free next season.

So, going into the Club America game tonight, De Gea is all set to start in goal for United. It’s fantastic.

De Gea has been in full training with his team-mates since the start of the pre-season tour and although his head would have been distracted with the constant speculation around his future, he’ll be ready for the game.

“When you ask me about the attitude of De Gea I think the question is stupid,” Van Gaal told reporters this week.

“I cannot answer if Manchester United will sign Romero because it is a process. I can’t say anything about the process and the strategy of Manchester United.

“I’ve said that two or three press conferences and you are asking every time the same questions. Maybe you are right, or maybe not, it depends on David de Gea.

“Shall he stay? I don’t know! Maybe you? Maybe you have spoken with David? He’s training here and doing his utmost best.”

There are still no guarantees De Gea will be in goal for United by the time the transfer window closes at the end of August, Madrid’s decision to sign a different goalkeeper goes to show how much trouble they are having trying to prise him away from Old Trafford.

Just imagine if United manage to keep De Gea, sign a new centre-back and a striker? On top of the signings we’ve already made this year, you would have to call United title contenders and expect them to do well in Europe as well.
