Bastin Schweinsteiger and Wayne Rooney celebrate victory over Club America

Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s debut for Manchester United was everything fans wanted it to be and it’s great to see him all smiles alongside Wayne Rooney after the full-time whistle.

Not only was he calm in possession and decisive in his distribution but, almost more importantly, you could see Schweinsteiger barking orders at his team-mates.

He helped Man United’s teenagers in front of him and at points was giving Anders Lindegaard instructions too. In many ways, he took on the captain’s role when Rooney was off the pitch.

That sort of presence is one of Schweinsteiger’s greatest assets to this United team. He will help build the spine and bridge the gap between attack and defence that Rooney can’t control because he’s too far up the pitch.

You get the feeling that if Rooney hadn’t have impressed Louis van Gaal so much last season in the captain’s role, Schweinsteiger may well have been given the armband straight away.

He’s that sort of player. Schweinsteiger has been there, done it and got the t-shirt from everything a footballer can hope to achieve and that wealth of experience is going to bring so much to United.

More so than his actual footballing talent on the pitch, Schweinsteiger’s sense of awareness and ability to help those around him is likely to be why he becomes a very influential figure this season.
