The French midfield got on the end of a Juan Mata cross to loop a header into the far corner and his goal proved to be the difference as Man United ran out 1-0 winners over Club America.
Speaking after the game, Van Gaal said he had worked with Schneiderlin on heading in training and admitted the extra height was something that would help in the Premier League.
“He scored with Southampton, I believe five goals, so it is not a coincidence but we have practised this with him so I was very pleased with the performance,” he said.
“It is also a fact that America don’t have many good headers so we knew in advance that our benefit was there. Like I have said in the Premier League, it is not our benefit as we are always small.”
Schneiderlin’s physical presence helped United in far more areas than just in the opposition’s box and it’s great that the club has finally got a powerful midfielder of his ilk.
Yaya Toure’s importance to Manchester City goes to show how successful a midfielder of that stature can be and Schneiderlin can fill that role for United next season.
Along with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, United now have an excellent array of choices in central midfield and that sort of squad depth is what the club will need in order to compete in all competitions.
