Memphis Depay confident of partnership with Wayne Rooney

Manchester United winger Memphis Depay is confident he can build a successful partnership with Wayne Rooney.

Memphis officially joined Man United from PSV in June having had an outstanding season in the Eredivisie, where he scored 22 goals and made grabbed five assists.

The 21-year-old featured in the No.10 position on his debut against Club America and impressed supporters with his performance as United ran out 1-0 winners in Seattle.

After playing directly behind Rooney in the game, Depay feels he can build a fruitful partnership with the England captain.

“Wayne coached me a lot through the game and talked to me about which position I should take and when to defend,” Depay said.

“We have to form a duo and I have the right feeling with him. It’s an honour to play with such a legend like Wazza.”

Having watched Depay’s debut for the club, United fans will have learned a little bit more about what his game is all about and something which is good to know is that he isn’t all about raw power and pace.

Memphis showed he has a deft touch when necessary and some of his link-up play with his team-mates was excellent, so there is every chance he could play in that central role next season and build this partnership with Rooney.

However, it is still certain where Van Gaal plans to deploy Memphis once the season begins. Having shown his ability both in a central and left-wing positions, Memphis has certainly showed his versatility but it all depends on what Van Gaal wants to predominantly use him as.
