Louis van Gaal: Matteo Darmian is second-choice at Manchester United behind Antonio Valencia

Louis van Gaal has revealed that new Manchester United signing Matteo Darmian is his second-choice right-back behind Antonio Valencia.

The Italian joined Man United earlier this month for a fee of £12.9m on a four-year contract.

Darmian has already impressed in a Man United shirt after putting in a fine performance against Club America last Friday.

However, following the manager’s comments, it looks like the 25-year-old will be forced to play second fiddle to Valencia at Old Trafford.

“We have brought Darmian for the second position behind [Antonio] Valencia and now already because of that injury [Paddy] McNair has to play there,” Van Gaal said.

This revelation has somewhat shocked United fans. Valencia, a winger by trade, struggled in the right-back position last year. Darmian’s arrival at the club was supposed to signal the end of Valencia’s time there but it seems like supporters will have to endure more shaky defensive displays from the Ecuadorian.

Hopefully Darmian can continue to display his talent at right-back during the rest of United’s pre-season tour before establishing himself as first-choice in van Gaal’s plans for the upcoming season.
