Memphis Depay has revealed that he wants to be a Manchester United legend someday.
The Dutchman joined the club from PSV Eindhoven this summer on a four-year contract for a fee of around £31m.
Memphis scored his first goal for Man United in the 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday and he has impressed during the pre-season tour.
Speaking to the BBC, the 21-year-old made it clear that he wanted to make his mark at Old Trafford.
“I want to be a legend at some time. But the important thing to do is to focus on the next game… because I have to do my job in every game,” he said.
Such an ambitious remark can often come back to haunt players, but Memphis’ boldness is indicative of someone who plays without fear.
The forward’s flair and dribbling ability offers something different to Ashley Young on the left flank, who places emphasis on crossing instead.
Adjusting to the English game shouldn’t be a problem for a player who almost single handedly led PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, scoring 22 goals. He begins his journey at United brimming with confidence.
Memphis is, without doubt, an exciting young prospect. But at this point he is no more than a rough diamond. Whether he can match the feats of United legends like Best, Charlton, Cantona and Ronaldo remains to be seen.
