Bastian Schweinsteiger to miss Barcelona game due to injury

Louis van Gaal has revealed Bastian Schweinsteiger has suffered an injury and will not play against Barcelona on Saturday.

The German midfielder had previously played 45 minutes in each of Manchester United’s pre-season games so far on tour but he will not feature this weekend.

Although Van Gaal confirmed an injury to Schweinsteiger, he refused to give specifics as to what the injury was but reiterated on more than one occasion that it was a minor injury.

“He has a minor issue,” Van Gaal told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

“I don’t take risks in preparation & he doesn’t either. It’s not serious.”

It’s a real shame that Schweinsteiger will miss the Barcelona game but given the quality in United’s squad, Van Gaal has plenty of other options available.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera can all occupy roles in central midfield as can Marouane Fellaini, so United should be well covered in that position.

Hopefully Schweinsteiger’s withdrawal from this weekend’s match is nothing more than precautionary to make sure he doesn’t aggravate the injury and make it any worse than it needs to be.
