Manchester United’s summer transfer window: Who’s left, joined and what’s next?

by Sam Peoples

It’s been a hectic transfer window for Manchester United as Louis van Gaal prepares for a title challenge next season but what exactly has the club been up to?

Man United’s first signing was, of course, winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. Van Gaal had to swoop in quickly for the 21-year-old in order to stop PSG from signing him.

The next agreed deal was for 16-year-old Belgian keeper Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui, who expected to train with the U18s next season.

The much maligned midfielder Tom Cleverley was the first player to depart Old Trafford in this transfer window, signing for Everton on a free transfer.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos was the next player to leave the club, moving to Bolton on a free transfer. He was quickly followed by Saidy Janko and Tom Thorpe, who joined Celtic and Rotherham respectively. It remains a mystery how Thorpe, who was imperious at U21s level, never got a chance to feature in the senior squad.

Nani ended his eight year period at United after moving to Fenerbahce. The winger was only sporadically effective during the latter stages of his time at Old Trafford and couldn’t hold down a regular place.

Striker Will Keane was loaned out to Championship side Preston for the season, while Joe Rothwell and Ben Pearson both went out on loan to League One side Barnsley.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal completed the capture of right-back Matteo Darmian. Given United’s problems at right-back last season, this was a wonderfully smart and sensible bit of business.

The Dutchman then made the incredible double signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin. These two add a wealth of steel and efficiency to United’s core,  something that hasn’t been seen for some time at Old Trafford.

Robin van Persie has now left to Fenerbahce. The Dutch striker was an indomitable force in his first season at United, scoring 30 goals in all competitions as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side romped to the title in the Scot’s final season as manager. United fans will always remember van Persie fondly for that season alone.

Reece James move to Wigan Athletic is the most recent outgoing from Old Trafford, and most likely won’t be the last.

There is still plenty of transfer activity bound to happen at United during this window. Speculation continues to loom over the future of David De Gea and  and Angel di Maria, while rumours of Sergio RamosPedro, Sergio Ramoero and Nicolas Otamendi joining United refuse to die down.
