Matteo Damian has every reason to be happy thanks to enjoying the perfect start to his Manchester United career.
The 25-year-old, who was signed from Torino a fortnight ago, has impressed fans with his solid displays throughout Man United’s pre season tour, with such impressive performances leading to comparisons to the likes of Gary Neville.
The Italian international was given the nod ahead of Antonio Valencia for the game against FC Barcelona, despite the latter now being match fit, which suggests Louis van Gaal sees Darmian as his first choice right-back.
At times last season, United were constantly targeted down the left-hand side, with Valencia identified as a weak-spot by many opposition teams.
However, in addition to his seemingly hardworking mentality, Darmian’s qualities in both defence and attack have shown that he is a cut above the likes of Valencia and will likely head into the season as first choice for the right back position.

Both Darmian and Luke Shaw have arguably been United’s best players throughout the tour, with both players linking up well with United’s wingers.
Such qualities in attack and defence hopefully means United are well equipped to deal with the very best attacking outfits in football and with rumours still circulating regarding Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Ramos, Van Gaal’s defensive woes may soon become a thing of the past.
