Louis van Gaal doesn’t believe Manchester United can afford to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer but admits he’d love to sign the Portuguese superstar.
The striker has gone on to score a mind-boggling 313 goals in 300 appearances so far at Real Madrid and every summer Man United are linked with a move to try and bring him back to Old Trafford.
Although Van Gaal would love to make that happen this summer to boost United’s worrying lack of quality up front, he admits it will be almost impossible thanks to the price Real Madrid would put on him.
In an extensive interview out in USA, Van Gaal was asked whether he could see Ronaldo ever returning to United.
“He may come but it is not possible,” he said.
“Yeah, of course [I’d love to sign him]. But that’s not possible.”
When further questioned on why that move wouldn’t be possible, Van Gaal added: “Because you have the club, Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend.”
Ronaldo may be 30 but he is still without a shadow of a doubt one of the world’s best players and given how prolific he is in front of goal, it comes as no surprise to hear Van Gaal would love to sign him.
Every United fan would love Van Gaal to sign him but a move is extremely unlikely, especially when combined with the fact United are refusing to sell David de Gea below the right price.
Four new signings including midfield duo Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin have seen Man United spend £80m already this summer but there is still plenty of funds left thanks to the corporate success at United over recent years. However, Van Gaal doesn’t feel Ronaldo’s price-tag will fall within their budgets and that’s an indication of just how much he will cost.
Would you love to see Cristiano Ronaldo re-signed this summer and if so how much would he cost?
