Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen, mooted as a potential replacement for David de Gea if he leaves for Real Madrid, has suffered a calf injury that might rule him out of the first leg of his side’s Champions League qualifying tie against Rapid Wien on Wednesday.
If Cillessen misses the game, he would avoid being cup-tied if he was to make the switch to Man United.
However, Ajax boss Frank de Boer moved to calm the speculation by insisting Cillessen genuinely has an injury.
“We’ll have to wait to see if he is able to play. No, he really has a calf injury. Luckily, I would say, in this case,” De Boer said.
The majority of fans have dismissed the idea of Cillessen joining United and it would be hard to disagree on first glance.
However, van Gaal and goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek will know everything about him. If they believe he is good enough to play for United, that’s all that matters.
