Sergio Romero will be Manchester United’s first choice if David de Gea leaves for Real Madrid – report

Sergio Romero will be the first-choice keeper for Manchester United if David de Gea leaves Old Trafford, according to Olé.

Romero signed for Man United on a free transfer last month after spending time at Sampdoria and Monaco.

The news comes after Louis van Gaal reportedly asked the club to sell De Gea, with the Dutchman labelling the Spaniard’s situation as “not favourable” for any of the parties involved.

The transfer saga with De Gea seemed to be making slow progress until van Gaal’s request to sell the Spaniard, though Olé also claims that Real Madrid are ready to pay up to €40m for him.

De Gea has remained silent throughout the summer, but has always seemed intent on leaving for Madrid.

Olé refers to the situation as one in which everybody wins. Real Madrid sign De Gea, Romero gets a chance with a top European side and Argentina manager Tata Martino will see his first-choice keeper play for a top club.

But whether Man United will benefit as much from the transfer remains to be seen. Olé does claim Romero’s head would be 100% in Manchester, unlike De Gea’s. However, Romero has largely played as a back-up goalkeeper in the last two seasons. The Argentine will have to up his game if he is to be successful at Old Trafford.
