New Southampton midfielder Jordy Clasie has insisted that he would’ve signed for Southampton even if Manchester United made a bid for him.
Louis van Gaal, who included Clasie in his 23-man squad for the World Cup last summer, was reportedly interested in bringing the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford upon his arrival as manager last year.
The 24-year-old instead chose to join Ronald Koeman at Southampton for a fee of £8.4m last month.
Clasie claims that Southampton was always his next destination after leaving Feyenoord.
“If the United interest had become concrete I think I still would have preferred Southampton,” said Clasie.
“It’s better to start lower and finish higher than the other way round.”
Following the recent influx of midfield talent at Man United, Clasie’s reluctance to re-join van Gaal is understandable.
As a 24-year-old you’re entering the highpoint of your career as a dynamic midfielder. Spending those years on van Gaal’s bench would be a waste, especially for somebody of Clasie’s talent. Clasie is guaranteed game time under Koeman, who handed him his Feyenoord debut at the age of 20.
