Bastian Schweinsteiger, introduced to the Old Trafford crowd on the hour mark against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, enjoyed a solid cameo in his first competitive match as a Manchester United player.

Although he did make one sloppy mistake which led to a good opportunity for Spurs, Schweinsteiger’s passing and leadership made a real impact on the fixture.

The German just oozes composure, which is fantastic to see given the problems Louis van Gaal had with his midfield last term.

Schweinsteiger’s presence on the pitch lifts the crowd, gives his teammates a boost and instills an element of fear into the opposition.

There is still a question mark over whether or not he will be 100% fit all season but Louis van Gaal will know exactly when to use him this term.

Having the ability to rotate Schweinsteiger, Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera will make a huge difference to United’s chances of being successful on all fronts.

August is a busy month for United and fans will soon realise how crucial it is to have quality depth when you are taking part in so many competitions. Schweinsteiger’s European experience, in particular, will be vital.
