Louis van Gaal hails wonderful saves of Sergio Romero

Louis van Gaal was delighted with the performance of Sergio Romero in his Manchester United debut and hailed his ‘wonderful saves’.

The Argentinian goalkeeper stepped in for David de Gea who was dropped for the Tottenham Hotspur game and didn’t put a foot wrong.

In the later stages of the game, Spurs pressed Man United back and Romero came up with a few crucial saves to help secure the three points and, for himself, keep an all important clean sheet on his debut.

After not playing at all in the pre-season tour, fans expected Romero to be rusty but his shot stopping was excellent and on more than one occasion he was quick off his line to quash some danger.

Speaking after the game, Van Gaal said: “I liked the performances of the debutants especially from Matteo Darmian. Sergio Romero saved wonderfully.”

Romero was under the spotlight today because he was replacing De Gea but when called upon by a Spurs side who didn’t offer too much threat over the 90 minutes, he dealt with them well.

Time will tell whether Romero has an opportunity to become United’s No.1 on a full-time basis but on a day where he was under pressure to perform, he did well against Tottenham Hotspur which will only help boost his confidence some more.
