Alexandre Lacazette signs contract extension with Olympique Lyonnais

Alexandre Lacazette has signed a two-year contract extension with Olympique Lyonnais.

Lacazette has been strongly linked with a move to a bigger club this summer, with Manchester United widely rumoured to be one of the clubs interested in the 24-year-old.

The new deal sees him tied down to Lyon until the end of the 2017/18 season and effectively ends speculation surrounding the French international’s future for the time being.

Speaking to Lyon’s official website, the striker revealed his happiness at signing a new deal with his boyhood club.

“It’s a great moment, it is a sign of confidence from the club, now we can stop talking about that [transfer rumours],” he said.

Club president Jean-Michel Aulas also had his say on the deal, saying: “It is a positive and important moment for the club.

“This signature fits with our policy of producing our own players. Alexandre Lacazette carries our hopes with the France team.

“He has handled the discussion about his future in a mature and intelligent way.”

While Lacazette’s contract extension all but ends Man United’s hopes of signing him this summer, the short-term nature of the deal suggests that it is a precursor to the French international eventually leaving the club.

Lyon have ensured that they will not find themselves in a situation such as the one United face with David De Gea, who will likely leave Old Trafford on a free when his deal expires next year. Lacazette’s contract ensures that Lyon will be rewarded with a substantial fee should a transfer for the French international be agreed next summer.

Louis Van Gaal‘s striking options are wearing thin. With Karim Benzema heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, and Lacazette seemingly staying put, the Dutchman must act quickly to secure a striker who could potentially make the difference in a title challenge this year.
