David de Gea pictured in Manchester United’s new Champions League kit

David de Gea was left out of Manchester United’s squad to face Tottenham Hotspur for the Premier League opener but there is a much more important game in terms of his future coming up soon.

The first leg of Man United’s Champions League qualifier is next week against Club Brugge and his inclusion, or exclusion, from that squad could well define where his future lies.

If De Gea were to play in against Club Brugge and United qualified to the group stages, he would then be cup tied for the Champions League.

That means if he were to move to Real Madrid after that, he wouldn’t be eligible to play for them in the Champions League which would, from their perspective, not be an ideal situation at all.

Will this be the only photo of De Gea in United’s kit for the Champions League?

United have stood firm all summer long and Real Madrid have failed to meet their demands but with so little time left in the window, there is every chance Real Madrid intensify their pursuit of De Gea in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Keeping De Gea, especially after the excellent which have been made, would make this summer window one of the best in the club’s recent history. Fingers crossed it can happen.
