Manchester United target Sergio Ramos ready to extend contract with Real Madrid – report

by Ben Topliss

Sergio Ramos is ready to extend his contract with Real Madrid next week, according to the Guardian’s Sid Lowe.

Manchester United have had two formal offers rejected for Ramos after he told Madrid that he wanted to leave for Old Trafford last month.

However, he was told at a further meeting that he would not be sold under any circumstances as club president Florentino Perez was worried about losing two stalwarts in one summer following the exit of Iker Casillas to Porto.

Madrid have now offered a new five-year deal to Ramos, increasing his salary €2m a year to €9m after tax. Ramos has two years remaining on his current contract.

Although nothing has been signed, both parties are confident of reaching an agreement and an announcement is expected next week.

It is a bitter blow to miss out on Ramos but supporters will take comfort from the fact that his new deal effectively rules out David de Gea leaving United for Madrid this summer.

United are in need of a centre-back as the versatile Daley Blind has been playing there but it looks like Louis van Gaal is happy with his options. The expected arrival of Barcelona’s Pedro will likely conclude United’s transfer activity this summer.
