Manchester United’s Bastian Schweinsteiger dismisses fitness concerns

Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has insisted he is closing in on a return to full fitness amid concerns over his injury record.

Schweinsteiger missed large chunks of the last two seasons with Bayern Munich due to injury.

This led current Bayern boss Pep Guardiola to cast doubt over his fitness earlier this summer.

However, Schweinsteiger is adamant that he will soon be at his ‘highest level’ for Man United.

“I am fit, I am getting fitter. I had long holidays this summer and I came a little bit late to the team, and then I had a small calf injury in America, which was not perfect,” he said.

“But I am getting in better and better shape and within one or two weeks I will be at the highest level and then I can play like I want.

“In the past, I was not injured that much. I had a small problem with my knee and one operation on my ankle three years ago. And by the way I won the World Cup, so you have to be fit!”

Louis van Gaal will be fully aware of when best to use Schweinsteiger. Along with Michael Carrick, Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera, the experienced Dutchman will have plenty of opportunities to rotate.

Schweinsteiger was brought in for his vast experience and this will prove to be invaluable in the biggest games this season.
