Manchester United legend Bryan Robson believes Memphis Depay has what it takes to play in the iconic No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.
Man United have had some disappointing No.7s in recent years in the form of Angel di Maria, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia.
Previously, the likes of Robson, David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and George Best had put in some scintillating performances wearing the shirt.
Robson backed Memphis to shine at United but warned supporters it may take take for him to fully settle in.
“I think he [Memphis] is a confident lad. He’s got great ability and great pace. So I don’t think that’s going to be a hassle to him, otherwise he wouldn’t have accepted the no.7 shirt as soon as it was offered to him,” Robson said.
“I think if he had a problem, mentally, handling the pressure that comes with the no.7 shirt, he would have said ‘no’ and asked for another number. So I’m sure and would hope he will enjoy playing for Manchester United, relax and play in the way he wants to play.
“Memphis is only a young lad so it’s going to take a little bit of time for him to settle down. It looks like he’s got great attributes and he could do really well for us.”
Memphis is still in the very early stages of his career at United but he has often spoke of how he wants to become one of the best players in the world.
Of course, it is important not to put too much pressure on his young shoulders but it’s hard not to get excited about Memphis. He will be looking to get his first competitive goal for United during the trip to Aston Villa on Friday.
