Louis van Gaal wants Manchester United to start strong this season

Louis van Gaal believes a good start to the season is one of Manchester United’s main objectives this year.

United lost their first game of the season last year to Swansea at Old Trafford and continued to limp through the opening rounds of the Premier League, with draws with Sunderland and Burnley before their first win which came against Queens Park Rangers in the middle of September.

United have signed five players who could all be starters and must adjust to their new manager’s style before the team can properly gel and Van Gaal is aware of this.

Speaking ahead of United’s first away game against Aston Villa tonight, Van Gaal said: “You have to survive the start always. You have new players, a new team, a new team process, the team dynamics are different.

“Every club and every team has to sustain this period because nobody is 100% fit […] but it cannot cost as many points as last year and that is our main objective.”

Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinstieger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Sergio Romero and Memphis Depay all featured last week against Spurs with four of them starting and it will go a long to them settling into the squad.

There is still a period of adjustment within the squad and Van Gaal will want to get through that period as quickly as possible in order to stamp his style of play on the squad.

United also have the added headache of a Champions League Qualifier home and away legs against Club Brugge with a Newcastle game at Old Trafford sandwiched in between.

They face a real test to begin the season and in a year where Louis van Gaal must prove his worth to the club following a serious outlay in terms of finances he will have to start the season well to build confidence in the dressing room and on the terraces of Old Trafford.
