Bastian Schweinsteiger is very pleased with his fitness and now believes he will be at 100 per cent fitness within one or two weeks.
The German midfielder suffered a setback to his fitness on the pre-season tour with a minor calf injury but with two successful substitute appearances so far this season, he is edging towards being back to full fitness.
Schweinsteiger’s classy cameo against Aston Villa showed how much composure he can bring to Man United and he’s looking forward to bringing that experience to the team on a regular basis.
“It was important to play 30 minutes and step by step I want to reach 100 per cent,” Schweinsteiger said ahead of the Club Brugge game.
“I am fit, I am getting fitter. I had long holidays this summer and I came a little bit late to the team. And then I had a small calf injury in America, which was not perfect.
“But I am getting in better and better shape and within one or two weeks I will be at the highest level and then I can play like I want.
“In the past, I was not injured that much. I had a small problem with my knee and one operation on my ankle three years ago. And by the way, I won the World Cup in Brazil, so you have to be fit.”
Signing Schweinsteiger could yet prove to be one of the best buys of the summer if he can prove his fitness worries are a thing of the past because there’s a reason he is known as the ‘Football God’ in Germany – he is one of the best around.
Michael Carrick‘s waning influence in the team as a consequence of his own fitness struggles left United in a predicament last season that Van Gaal had no answer to. Now, he has Schweinsteiger and he is arguably the preferred starter when both are fit.
This season has lots in store for United who are intent on competing in all competitions and while the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian are also looking like wonderful signings, Schweinsteiger brings so much more to the team than simply being a quality player.
His experience, know-how and influence of those around him will see those playing alongside Schweinsteiger take their own games up a level and that’s going to make such a big difference.
Previously, United have been burned after signing a World Cup winner (Kleberson) but you get the feeling that if he can indeed stay fit, Schweinsteiger could be one of the best buys the club has made in a long time.
