Manchester United’s Juan Mata conscious of Club Brugge threat

Juan Mata has urged Manchester United not to be complacent ahead of his side’s Champions League qualifier with Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Man United will take on the Belgian side in their first Champions League qualifier since 2005.

Louis van Gaal‘s men are favourites to progress from the tie following their 100% start to the 2015/16 campaign.

However, writing in his weekly blog, the Spaniard notes that Tuesday’s opponents are no pushovers.

“I have to say that the opponent is not an easy one,” wrote Mata.

“Club Brugge has a lot of history in European football, they have just eliminated Panathinaikos with a 3-0 win at home, and I’m sure they are in good shape because the league in Belgium started two weeks earlier than the Premiership.”

Brugge represent an unknown quantity for United, since the two sides have never met in a UEFA competition. This has led the majority of supporters to write off the Belgian side due to the fact that they haven’t progressed to the Champions League group stages since the 2005/06 season.

However, with the second leg in Belgium, this tie will not be a cakewalk for United who, in spite of their 100% winning start this season, remain unconvincing in several departments.

Old Trafford will be awash with nervous excitement on Tuesday. Despite United’s immense experience in the Champions League, there’s a chance of this anxiety leading to a stagnant display, which is a dangerous prospect against a side that will have nothing to lose upon their visit to the Theatre of Dreams.
