Michael Carrick has identified the upcoming Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge as one of Manchester United’s most important games of the season.

Man United host Brugge this Tuesday before playing the second leg in Belgium on the 26th August, with the winner earning a place in the Champions League group stages.

Louis van Gaal‘s side have prepared well for the tie with victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Carrick has recognised the significance of the upcoming encounter with Brugge.

“It’s going to be a big night on Tuesday,” he said.

“It’ll be a big two games in fact. They could help set us up for the season.

“What we have to gain is very important, but you approach both matches as any other games. We want to win on Tuesday and not concede.

“Hopefully we can get a good start and take a lead to their place. We’ll be ready.”

For a club of United’s stature, missing out on the Champions League group stages for two years in a row is simply unthinkable. The tie is a must win encounter.

Old Trafford will undoubtedly be buzzing as Europe’s biggest competition makes its long awaited return. However, the anticipation will inevitably be laced with some nerves. The worst possible thing United can do is let their performance suffer due to anxiety, especially against a team that, as underdogs, will play with fearlessness and freedom.

But as shown last season, United are capable of standing up in big games. The additions of Morgan Schneiderlin and Matteo Darmian has given the side a stronger backbone and, subsequently, a fantastic platform for winning important games.
