Real Madrid confirm Sergio Ramos will have renewal ceremony this afternoon

Real Madrid have announced that Sergio Ramos will be unveiled this afternoon in a ceremony having signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Ramos had flirted with a move to Manchester United this summer to the point where many felt a move was genuinely going to happen but instead he has got a bumper pay rise and stayed at Madrid.

A statement on Real Madrid’s official website reads: “Today, Monday 17 August, at 1:30pm CEST, an event will be held in the Santiago Bernabéu’s presidential box to mark Sergio Ramos’ contract renewal. Presiding over the event will be the Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, and the player himself, who will remain at the club for the next five seasons.”

While no fan is surprised that this is the outcome for Ramos, it doesn’t make it any less frustrating that yet another player has used Man United as a tool for securing a lucrative pay rise at their current club.

Ramos can now be added to the list of players, which continues to grow each summer, who have benefited from being linked to United without ever joining the club.

I wonder who will be next to use what is quickly becoming one of the most powerful tools a player has in contract negotiations, dropping United’s name in the hat, to their advantage.
