The German midfielder joined Man United in July for a fee of around £15m, inciting high levels of adulation amongst supporters, and became re-united with Van Gaal having played under him for Bayern Munich.
United begin their 2015/16 Champions League campaign in tonight’s qualifier against Club Brugge after a year’s absence and Schweinsteiger has backed Van Gaal as the perfect manager to bring United back to the top.
“This is what makes them the charm for me.
“I can promise to give everything and try with my experience to help to internationally reach the level of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern.”
Despite his previous experience under Van Gaal, Schweinsteiger says that the presence of the Dutchman was not the main motivation behind his move.
He added: “If you know how a coach is ticking and how he can play football, it makes a decision easier.
“But I went primarily because of the club… the fact that the coach still fits so well, of course, is ideal.”
Van Gaal knows what it takes to win the Champions League having steered Ajax to glory back in 1995 and his record should be a cause for optimism amongst United fans.
However, the Dutchman’s last European excursion which ended in defeat at home to Inter was over four years ago. Since then, the European football climate has altered and Van Gaal will be wary of that.
