Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal knows his side are under pressure ahead of their Champions League qualifier.

Man United face Club Brugge on Tuesday in the first leg of their play-off and Van Gaal realises the importance of the tie.

Having missed out on European football last season, United are desperate to get themselves back into the continents premier club competition.

The Dutchman is not underestimating the significance of the occasion. Speaking about the game, Van Gaal said: The players and the board want to participate, but especially the fans want to participate [in the Champions League], so the pressure is high.”

“With that pressure we have to show our authority against a very good team. You can’t say there is not any pressure, because it is a hard game.”

Two years without Champions League football is almost unfathomable for United fans and after the disappointment of last year, the tie against Brugge is one of the biggest of the season.

The return of European football to Old Trafford is bound to get everyone involved in the club excited. However, failure to qualify to the group stage would be a huge setback. The importance of the tie can not be overemphasised enough and Van Gaal’s men will be looking to put last year’s mistakes right.
