Bastian Schweinsteiger impressed on his European debut for Manchester United as Louis van Gaal’s side defeated Club Brugge 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger came on as a half-time substitute for Michael Carrick, who scored an early own goal to give Brugge the lead, and slotted in perfectly alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in midfield.

The German gave the sort of performance that he has become renowned for by dictating play while sitting in front of the Man United back four.

Schweinsteiger’s introduction allowed United to start playing at a tempo of their choosing and fans were delighted with his display:

Schweinsteiger can expect his first start in a United shirt against Newcastle United on Saturday after Carrick was hauled off against Brugge.

It would be a move that would definitely please supporters given the sort of form the 31-year-old has shown in the early stages of his United career.

Schweinsteiger has already began to show just how good a player he is, despite being restricted to three substitute appearances so far this season. If he carries on playing the way he has been, it is simply a matter of time before the World Cup winner is included in the starting XI.
