Louis van Gaal praises Memphis Depay following display against Club Brugge: ‘I have confidence in him’

Louis van Gaal has praised Memphis Depay following his superb performance in the 3-1 victory over Club Brugge at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Memphis put on a masterful display, scoring two brilliant goals and setting up Marouane Fellaini for a third in injury time.

Starting on the left wing, the 21-year-old proved just why Man United paid so much money for him with a first-half brace straight from the top drawer.

After the game, van Gaal said: “I am very happy for Memphis because a player needs that. I said it was a matter of time and hopefully he shall continue. He is 21 and he has only played two seasons for PSV, I have confidence in him.”

Despite United’s commanding performance, especially in the second half, the manager is not taking anything for granted going into the second leg in Brugge next week. Van Gaal realises that even with a two-goal lead to take to Belgium, United will need to avoid complacency.

“It is not a simple opponent. It is still a game but, because of that last goal, it is more confident for us,” he said.

Nevertheless, Fellaini’s goal late into the second half ensured a much more comfortable result for United, who can now focus on the Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday.
