Chelsea confirm signing of Pedro from Barcelona

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Pedro from Barcelona for a fee believed to be around £21m.

Pedro had been linked with a move to Manchester United for a number of weeks and Ed Woodward reportedly flew out to Spain on Monday to conclude a deal.

However, a dramatic day on Wednesday saw Chelsea steal the player from under Man United’s nose.

The official line from United was that they had dropped their interest in Pedro on the orders of Louis van Gaal, who was not said to be convinced by him.

It was a bizarre stance given the club had worked so hard on him for so long. Why did Woodward fly out to Spain if they weren’t interested?

Instead, United have reportedly identified Southampton forward Sadio Mane as an alternative.

In stealing Pedro from United, Chelsea have strengthened their own team, weakened a rival and undermined van Gaal and Woodward in the transfer market. The whole episode has been a disaster as far as United are concerned and they are running out of time in the transfer window to get fans back on side.
