Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini happy with number switch

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has insisted he was happy to switch his shirt number from 31 to 27 in order to accommodate Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Fellaini was handed the No.27 shirt this season as Schweinsteiger wore the No.31 for a number of years at Bayern Munich.

However, the No.27 has a special meaning for Fellaini which stems from his days at Standard Liege early on in his career.

“When I was younger and became a professional, Standard Liege gave me the No.27,” he said.

“It was a great number for me and, when I had the chance to change, I did. After that, I heard that Bastian Schweinsteiger liked the No.31 and I had no problem with that. I am really pleased with my new number.”

Fellaini, wearing the shirt for the first time, scored in the 3-1 victory against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The Belgian is currently serving a domestic ban but will be available for selection again following the game against Newcastle United this weekend. He was one of Man United’s most important players last season and he will be looking to continue that form this term.
