Louis van Gaal confident Memphis Depay will cope with media attention and scrutiny

Louis van Gaal is totally confident that Memphis Depay is able to handle media attention and remain modest.

The winger has been subject to universal acclaim after his superb brace in Manchester United’s first leg 3-1 win over Club Brugge.

Some have gone as far as to call him the ‘Dutch Ronaldo’ and Arjen Robben firmly believes Memphis will become one of the best players in the world, high praise indeed.

Amid the raucous adulation for Memphis, Van Gaal has noted the importance of keeping his feet on the ground in the midst of being glorified.

“When he scores goals you have to be modest,” the boss told MUTV.

“I’ve seen that Memphis was modest in his answers to the media after his two goals and assist. I like that because there’s a long way still for him to go.

“He knows that, I know that, the club knows that and his fellow players know that. That’s the most important thing. Of course he was great in this match but you are not always great – that you have to know.

“You have to improve, improve, improve! It is always difficult to keep feet on the ground. For every player it is difficult to manage that attention. Up to now, he’s done that very well.”

When it comes to being a superstar in football, coping with the media is a large part of it off the pitch and Van Gaal clearly has every confidence that won’t be an issue for the 21-year-old.

Memphis emphasised his disappointment over not being able to score more goals in Man United’s win on Tuesday, a game in which the 21-year-old was the star and saviour.

This, above anything, reflects the determined, confident persona of the Dutchman who has the mindset of a true winner.

While staying modest is important, so is striving to reach your goals. Upon arrival, Memphis declared his desire to become a United legend. This is the talk of a man who, brimming with raw confidence and ability, will strive to achieve big things regardless of what the media say.

Here’s hoping his performance against Club Brugge was an indication of what is to come this season from Memphis in a United shirt.
