Bastian Schweinsteiger made his first start for Manchester United in their disappointing 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

The German started alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in midfield and put in an efficient display, as Man United started the game brightly.

Still trying to work his way back to full fitness, Schweinsteiger was replaced by Michael Carrick on the hour mark, coming off to a rousing reception at Old Trafford.

Despite the disappointing result, United fans were pleased with the shift put in by their new midfield maestro.

United now turn their attentions back to Europe with a trip to Brugge in midweek and Schweinsteiger will be hoping for another opportunity to prove his fitness.

After manager Louis Van Gaal revealed before the game that Schweinsteiger still needed to work on his match fitness, United fans will be happy to see the World Cup winner finally starting a game in the famous red shirt.

He really does make such a difference to the composure in midfield in much the same fashion as Michael Carrick does. So far, Van Gaal has been chopping and changing between Schweinsteiger and Carrick in midfield and you do get the feeling that could be a trend which continues all season.
