Victor Valdes and Jonny Evans were both absent from the directors’ box today at Old Trafford as Manchester United played Newcastle United.
Both players have been continuously linked with moves to other clubs and the fact neither were with their team-mates today certainly indicates that they could be on their way out of Man United this summer.
Louis van Gaal has already told Valdes that he has no future at Old Trafford after he lacked the commitment to play for the reserves.
With impressive performances from Sergio Romero who has managed to keep three clean sheets in his first three games and David de Gea looking to stay for one more season, it won’t be long until the 33-year-old officially leaves the club.
As for Jonny Evans, the combination of injuries and a six-match spitting ban saw him limited to just 17 appearances last season and he has never had a cemented place in the team under Van Gaal, so his exit also looks like a case of when and not if.
It’s a real shame that Evans was never able to build upon the superb season he had alongside Rio Ferdinand when Nemanja Vidic was missing for a whole season but now is the right time for the club to let him go.
He’s young enough, 27, to go on and have a good career elsewhere and he won’t be getting that opportunity at United, so it’s certainly in his best interest to leave as well.
